HC Deb 09 November 1955 vol 545 cc1840-1
37. Mr. Ernest Davies

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation when it is proposed to start work on the duplication of the Great Cambridge Road from Bury Street, Edmonton, to Carter-hatch Lane, Enfield.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Before the end of the present financial year.

Mr. Davies

Would not the Minister agree that it would have been economic to continue the construction of the next stage of this dual carriageway rather than remove all the equipment, as has been done? The first part has been completed and then, instead of work continuing on the next section, the work has ceased. Why was it not continued?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

There is a great deal, in general principle, on which I agree with the hon. Gentleman. In this case, however, the contractor had very many obligations elsewhere, including the Cromwell Road extension.
