HC Deb 08 November 1955 vol 545 c1645
34. Mr. Hunter

asked the Minister of Works the approximate total value of office building under construction in London at the present time.

Mr. Birch

It is estimated that about £20 million is being spent on new office building in London this year.

Mr. Hunter

Can the Minister inform me whether the amount of office building is causing a shortage of materials and labour on housing estates in London and Middlesex?

Mr. Birch

The only shortage of building materials is of reinforcing steel, which does not affect housing very much. No doubt the demand for labour is competitive to a certain extent.
