HC Deb 08 November 1955 vol 545 cc1629-30
7. Mr. Timmons

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what progress has been made with the new maternity hospital at Bellshill.

Mr. J. Stuart

Site works are in progress for the nurses' home, which forms the first part of the project as a whole. Meanwhile the planning of the new hospital block is being advanced as rapidly as possible, and initial sketch plans are due at the end of this month.

Mr. Timmons

Is the Minister aware that over two and a half years have passed since the first intimation was made to me that authority was given to the Western Regional Board to go ahead with this hospital? Is he aware that when I passed the place last week-end I could see no sign of any progress whatever? Will the right hon. Gentleman do something to try to expedite the work on a new hospital which is so badly needed?

Mr. Stuart

I am informed that the work of excavation at the site is making satisfactory progress and that after its completion the building contractors will be ready to start.
