HC Deb 08 November 1955 vol 545 c1646
36. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Works what steps he has taken to avoid or lessen the emission of grit, dust, and smoke from Government buildings.

Mr. Birch

Smokeless equipment is installed in new buildings and is used for replacements in old buildings, and training is given to stokers.

Mr. Wiley

I am obliged to the right hon. Gentleman for his reply. Is he satisfied that his Department is doing enough and is setting a good example for other buildings?

Mr. Birch

We are getting on reasonably fast.

Mr. Anthony Greenwood

How many open fires are still in use in the old buildings?

Mr. Birch

I cannot give that figure without notice, but they are being eliminated pretty rapidly.
