HC Deb 01 November 1955 vol 545 c843
42. Mr. Royle

asked the Minister of Works if he will cause the Orangery, Kensington Palace, to be put to better use than at present for the benefit of visitors to Kensington Gardens.

Mr. Birch

I am considering this.

Mr. Royle

Does the Minister agree that it is unfortunate that this fine building is not being put to some use? Will he consider approaching the Arts Council to see whether it would be prepared to hold exhibitions of contemporary art there? I am sure that that would be appreciated at that end of the gardens.

Mr. Birch

I quite agree that better use can be made of this building. I am advised that it is not very suitable for picture exhibitions, owing to the shape of the panels and the absence of proper heating, but I have some ideas for its use which I should like to discuss with the hon. Member.
