HC Deb 01 November 1955 vol 545 cc840-1
37. Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Works if he will take steps to ensure the preservation and repair of Merchiston Castle, Edinburgh.

Mr. Birch

Responsibility for the preservation of this castle rests with Edinburgh Corporation, who are the owners. I am ready to consider any request for financial assistance or advice, and the corporation has been so informed.

Mr. Grimond

I agree that the initial responsibility rests upon the corporation, but is it not the case that the Government also have certain powers in regard to buildings of national importance, and should be prepared to exercise them, if necessary, in this case?

Mr. Birch

I think that an application will be made for assistance from historic buildings funds. I should not like to anticipate what will happen as a result.
