HC Deb 04 May 1955 vol 540 cc1667-8
13. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the present position in respect of the political dissensions and demands for constitutional revision in the Gold Coast.

Mr. Hopkinson

A Select Committee has been appointed by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to examine and make recommendations on the questions of a federal system of government for the Gold Coast and of a second Chamber.

Mr. Sorensen

Does that mean that all parties are now co-operating in this matter?

Mr. Hopkinson

No, Sir. I am afraid that so far it does not. The Opposition, when this matter of the appointment of a Select Committee was under discussion, walked out, so the Committee will consist only of the supporters of the Government of the C.P.P. But it is open to the Speaker to appoint additional members from the Opposition, if that proves to be worth while.
