HC Deb 03 May 1955 vol 540 cc1482-3
7. Lieut-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what limit he has decided to impose on the size of electric signs on the South Bank of the River Thames.

Mr. Sandys

No hard-and-fast standards are applied.

Lieut-Colonel Lipton

Is the Minister aware that the Lambeth Borough Council has been trying to impose a limit of 3 ft. on the size of the lettering on signs, and that in every case where an aggrieved advertiser has appealed against that the Minister has decided against the council? Has he any idea to what limit these signs can go—or is the sky the limit? Does he know that an application is pending for a sign with letters 13½ ft. high?

Mr. Sandys

Having, like the hon. and gallant Member, once been a Member for Lambeth, I can assure him that I have no prejudice against it.
