HC Deb 23 March 1955 vol 538 cc2063-4
55. Mr. Rankin

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation from what firms he has received proposals that they should take over the engineering base at Renfrew.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

A number of firms have asked if the base would be available if they obtained work to put there but none has as yet made firm bids for it.

Mr. Rankin

In view of the fact that it seems likely that a new employer will enter the base to use it partly, would the right hon. Gentleman consider the advisability of operating the base on a fifty-fifty basis as between B.E.A. and the new entrant, thereby ensuring full employment for the 800 staff presently engaged?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

No decision has been made with regard to this matter, but any suggestions, such as that which the hon. Member has been good enough to make, will certainly be considered.
