HC Deb 14 March 1955 vol 538 cc940-1
36. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the nature of the agreement between Her Majesty's Government and the Government of Thailand in respect of Communist activities in Thailand and the Federation of Malaya.

Mr. Nutting

There has been close and constant contact between the Siamese and Malayan authorities for some years and co-operation between the two police forces has been steadily growing. The object of this co-operation is to deny Communist terrorists the immunity of a foreign refuge and centre of operations. In the pursuit of effective co-operation an agreement with the Siamese authorities exists which permits movement across the frontier for police forces engaged in operations against the Communist terrorists and which facilitates exchanges of intelligence.

Mr. Sorensen

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that this will put a very effective stop to the withdrawal of Communist terrorists in Malaya over the border into Thailand which, I believe, has been going on for some time?

Mr. Nutting

I think the supplementary question is answered in the answer I gave to the original Question. We hope that these arrangements will result in that; that is their object.
