§ 6. Mr. Braineasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will publish a brief report showing what has been achieved in social and economic development during the period of office of the interim Government of British Guiana.
§ 18. Sir R. Robinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made in the carrying out of the economic development plan for British Guiana announced by his predecessor on 8th February, 1954.
§ Mr. HopkinsonMany schemes are now under way, but, broadly speaking, 1954 was a year of preparation. Nevertheless, expenditure totalled over £1,875,000, and the foundation laid should ensure substantial progress in the period which lies ahead. The British Guiana Government are about to publish an illustrated booklet on achievements in the social and economic fields in 1954, and I am arranging for copies to be placed in the Library of the House.
§ Mr. BraineWhile it is satisfactory that a booklet is to be published, can my right hon. Friend say whether he is satisfied that the Guianese are being kept fully in the picture as these developments proceed?
§ Mr. HopkinsonFrom what I saw in British Guiana when I was out there last autumn, I think that the information services are particularly well organised. It seemed to me that, through radio broadcasts, and also pamphlets, a good deal was being done to keep the people informed.
