HC Deb 01 March 1955 vol 537 c1858
4. Brigadier Rayner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make available some part of the accumulated balance of the National Land Fund in order to pay for the special needs of the national parks.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I am considering all the proposals about this Fund, but I am not ready yet to make a statement.

Brigadier Rayner

Would my right hon. Friend bear in mind that the national park authorities have not anything like enough money to carry out their duties under the National Parks Act, and will he also bear in mind that it is not fair to place on local people—I am thinking particularly of Dartmoor and Exmoor—the heavy financial responsibility of a national park?

Mr. Butler

I am aware of all these issues but I am not ready yet to make a statement.

Mr. Dalton

Will the right hon. Gentleman take note of the increasing support for this proposal by people both inside and outside the House?

Mr. Butler

I am aware of the right hon. Gentleman having been the author of this Fund, and of the importance that he attaches to it.
