HC Deb 23 June 1955 vol 542 c1480
10. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the President of the Board of Trade to make a statement on his proposals to provide more encouragement for the expansion and further modernisation of the pottery industry.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

The Government's fiscal and economic policy has been to encourage industry to expand and modernise. The pottery industry has certainly not been backward in these matters.

Mr. Ellis Smith

Does the right hon. Gentleman not agree that the pottery industry has made a great contribution to the expansion of our export trade and that, if more encouragement were given and some modernisation carried out, the industry could make a still greater contribution?

Mr. Thorneycroft

I certainly agree that the pottery industry has made a great contribution, thanks, in part at any rate, to the policy pursued by Her Majesty's Government.
