HC Deb 23 June 1955 vol 542 cc1492-3
40. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Labour the numbers of furniture trade workers registered as wholly unemployed and the number of working short time, at the latest convenient date.

Sir W. Monckton

On 16th May, there were 1,839 persons whose last employment was in the furniture and upholstery industry registered as wholly unemployed, and 4,225 registered as temporarily stopped, at employment exchanges in Great Britain.

Mr. Collins

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that his figures indicate that a substantial number of men have left the industry either because they were unemployed or because of the uncertainty of the future? Will the Minister bear this point in mind in connection with the consideration which his right hon. Friend has told us is being given to the industry?

Sir W. Monckton

I will see that the figures are brought to the notice of my right hon. Friend.
