HC Deb 21 June 1955 vol 542 cc1131-2
34. Mr. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many and what type of new schools it is proposed to build in Kilmarnock this year.

Mr. Henderson Stewart

The education authority hopes that Grassyards Roman Catholic Senior Secondary School will be opened towards the end of this year.

Mr. Ross

Surely, the Scottish Department appreciates the difficulties arising in Kilmarnock's new housing areas, and the problem there of the lack of school accommodation, apart from the need of further technical education—as instanced in the Answer to Question No. 6—especially necessary in Kilmarnock, which is a very important engineering centre? Is the hon. Gentleman entirely satisfied with the present position in Kilmarnock? [Interruption.] It may well suit interrupting hon. Gentlemen opposite that a model lodging house is still used for teaching primary children in the town, but is the hon. Gentleman aware that we in Kilmarnock are not so satisfied?

Mr. Stewart

As the hon. Member no doubt knows, projects are at present under consideration for building in Kilmarnock the Onthank primary school and a new technical college. One hopes that they will go ahead.
