§ 38. Mr. D. Jonesasked the Minister of Works what arrangements exist in his Department for custodians employed in the Custody Service, who have reached 65 years of age, and who do not desire to retire, to remain employed by the Department.
§ Mr. BevinsCustodians who reach the age of 65 years and desire to carry on may do so, provided they are still capable of carrying out their duties.
§ Mr. JonesCan the Minister explain why at Stanmore certain custodians above the age of 65 have recently been told that their employment is to be terminated on 1st October, in spite of the fact that there is no redundancy?
§ Mr. BevinsNo, but I will very gladly go into that matter. The general position is that if men who reach the age of 65 want to continue and are capable of continuing, they may do so. If the question of redundancy arises, men over 65 years of age are the first to go, in accordance with an agreement with the trade unions. This appears to be a special case, and I should be glad to look into it.
