HC Deb 16 June 1955 vol 542 c754
48. Mr. Dodds

asked the Prime Minister if he will arrange an immediate inquiry into the possibility of reducing the period of National Service in the Armed Forces.

The Prime Minister

I have nothing at present to add to my statement in the debate on National Service in this House on 28th April last.

Mr. Dodds

Does not the Prime Minister appreciate that there is a growing feeling that this country is carrying too big a burden as compared with some of our friends in Europe? Is not he aware that there is a feeling that an inquiry should be held? Why should he resist that at a time when the Americans have announced a reduction in their armed forces?

The Prime Minister

I can understand that there should be concern and interest in this matter. As I explained in the debate, and as I also explained during the General Election, I do not consider that, on the eve of going into a conference with a Power that has three years' national service, that is the best time at which to suggest a reduction in our own.
