§ 48. Mr. Doddsasked the Prime Minister if he will arrange an immediate inquiry into the possibility of reducing the period of National Service in the Armed Forces.
§ The Prime MinisterI have nothing at present to add to my statement in the debate on National Service in this House on 28th April last.
§ Mr. DoddsDoes not the Prime Minister appreciate that there is a growing feeling that this country is carrying too big a burden as compared with some of our friends in Europe? Is not he aware that there is a feeling that an inquiry should be held? Why should he resist that at a time when the Americans have announced a reduction in their armed forces?
§ The Prime MinisterI can understand that there should be concern and interest in this matter. As I explained in the debate, and as I also explained during the General Election, I do not consider that, on the eve of going into a conference with a Power that has three years' national service, that is the best time at which to suggest a reduction in our own.
