HC Deb 15 June 1955 vol 542 cc579-80
32. Sir F. Medlicott

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will introduce regulations whereby on traffic roundabouts precedence must be given to traffic approaching from the right.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

No, Sir. While I appreciate that there is some argument in favour of this, on balance I am very doubtful whether this would lead either to greater safety or better traffic flow. My Departmental Committee on Road Safety also takes this view.

Sir F. Medlicott

Is my right hon. Friend aware that a comparable principle has been accepted with considerable success in many foreign countries?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

My hon. Friend may be aware that in Western Germany, where it has operated for some time, the authorities are now expressing grave doubts as to whether it has helped.
