HC Deb 21 July 1955 vol 544 cc548-9
17. Sir F. Medlicott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the establishment of mobile police in Great Britain; and what is the strength of the force at the present time.

Major Lloyd-George

In the Metropolitan Police Force the establishment and strength of officers employed on traffic patrol duties are 802. In other police forces in England and Wales the allocation of officers to these duties is a matter for the chief officer of police to determine from time to time, and I regret that figures are not available.

Sir F. Medlicott

Is it not clear that the number of mobile police available is very small in relation to the volume of traffic on the roads? Will my right hon. and gallant Friend bear in mind the desirability of a great increase in this force if we are to take seriously the desire to reduce the toll of life and limb on the roads?

Major Lloyd-George

I will do everything I can to achieve the objects which my hon. Friend and others have in mind, but he must realise that many police forces are much below strength.
