HC Deb 21 July 1955 vol 544 cc545-6
24. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take administrative action to apply the recommendation of the Working Party of the Home Office on Hackney carriages, regarding privileged taxi-cab ranks at railway stations.

Major Lloyd-George

If the hon. Member has any particular difficulty in mind, I shall be glad to look into it.

Mr. Brockway

May I ask the right hon. and gallant Gentleman if he will give me an answer to the Question? The Question is whether, by administrative methods, he is prepared to put this recommendation into operation? This matter is causing bitterness not only in Slough, but in Manchester and many other parts of the country. Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman discuss it with the Minister of Transport?

Major Lloyd-George

I am not at all sure that it is not for the British Transport Commission to take administrative action. In any case, as the hon. Member knows, this matter is part and parcel of a very much bigger question. I do not see how we could bring about this particular reform, which is comparatively small, in advance of action on other recommendations which have to be considered.
