HC Deb 21 July 1955 vol 544 c555
37. Sir I. Fraser

asked the Minister of Education how many science and mathematical graduates entered the teaching profession last year; and how many took up industrial or other employment.

Sir D. Eccles

So far as concerns science and mathematical graduates starting to teach at maintained schools, I cannot add to the Answer I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Louth (Mr. Osborne) on 30th June. I have no reliable information for answering the second part of the Question; but I would refer my hon. Friend to the rough estimates given on behalf of the Lord President of the Council by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works in a reply last Tuesday.

Sir I. Fraser

Can my right hon. Friend assure the House that the Government are doing everything possible to ensure that there will be a continuing supply of graduates to man the schools, industry, atomic establishments, and so on?

Sir D. Eccles

Yes, Sir. We are to debate this question later today.
