HC Deb 21 July 1955 vol 544 cc543-4
20. Dr. D. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of licensed premises in Carlisle at which ladies can be refused service in one department or other; and the names of any such premises where there are no alternative arrangements for ladies to be served with drinks, other than restaurant arrangements, even though they are accompanied by husbands and relatives.

Major Lloyd-George

In all the fifty-eight licensed houses under State management in the City of Carlisle, the public bars, in accordance with local custom, are for men only. In two of those—the "Citadel Tavern" and the "Friars Tavern"—there is no provision for ladies.

Dr. Johnson

Will my right hon. and gallant Friend review these arrangements in general, and those at the "Citadel Tavern" in particular, so that ladies who are visitors to the city do not suffer the embarrassment of entering the wrong part of these premises?

Major Lloyd-George

I understand that the two premises mentioned are only a few minutes away from places where ladies can be admitted. The practice is not a result of State management but is, I gather, an old Carlisle custom.
