HC Deb 21 July 1955 vol 544 cc540-1
12. Mr. Hyde

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what records, before 1880, are preserved in his Department; the earliest date of such records; and when he expects to deposit them in the Public Record Office.

Major Lloyd-George

Home Office papers from March, 1871, are still in the custody of the Department. It is expected that papers up to and including those for 1878 will be sent to the Public Record Office by the end of this year and those for the years 1879–1880 as soon as possible thereafter.

Mr. Hyde

Can the Home Secretary say that there are no records prior to 1871 which are still preserved in his Department?

Major Lloyd-George

I could not answer that question without notice, but there are certain papers, of course, which in no circumstances—or not many circumstances—would be open to public inspection.
