48. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the total cost of the wharf improvements at Freetown; and from what sources the cost of those improvements has been found.

Mr. Hopkinson

The estimated total cost of the Queen Elizabeth II Quay is £1,469,410. This is being borne by the Sierra Leone Government, principally from loan funds raised for this purpose.

Mr. Tilney

Does my right hon. Friend agree that in these improvements there is a strategic content for the Atlantic Alliance, and that the amount falling on the Sierra Leone Government is very substantial? Is there no possibility of defence aid being granted?

Mr. Hopkinson

I shall be very glad to look into that point.
