HC Deb 14 July 1955 vol 543 cc2098-9
48. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has now given further consideration to the question of the licensing of private detectives; and whether he has yet reached a conclusion as to the possibilities of legislation.

Major Lloyd-George

I have considered the suggestion that private detectives should be licensed, but I am not prepared to introduce legislation to give effect to it.

Mr. Harold Davies

Does that reply mean that any Tom, Dick or Harry can set up as a private detective?

Major Lloyd-George

I would not like to commit myself on the gentlemen mentioned in the Question, but, unless there is evidence of grave abuse, I am not keen to extend the licensing system.
