asked the Minister of Defence to what extent he consults with eminent scientists in planning the defence of this country against the possibility of attacks by nuclear weapons.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

Effective arrangements exist, of which full use is made, for the Government to receive the advice of eminent scientists with regard to defence matters.

Mr. Hughes

Will the Minister tell us whether Lord Cherwell is part of these "effective arrangements," and whether Lord Cherwell has given advice upon National Service, which he has recently described as intellectually sterilising the youth of this country for a period of two years?

Mr. Lloyd

I think that, on these matters of the channels for advice by eminent scientists, I should like to see any question of the hon. Gentleman on the Order Paper.
