4. Mrs. Butlerasked the President of the Board of Trade if he will introduce a Bill to bring up to date the law relating to weights and measures, having regard to the unsatisfactory state of the law at present in many respects.
§ Mr. P. ThorneycroftNot this Session.
Mrs. ButlerIs the Minister aware that the continued delay in bringing weights and measures legislation up to date, and, in particular, the failure to give that added safeguard to the consumers which was envisaged by the Hodgson Report as long ago as 1951, is adding very considerably to the ordinary household budget? Will not the right hon. Gentleman at least look at the Report again to see whether there is anything 1721 he can do to implement its main recommendations in the interest both of traders and the general public?
§ Mr. ThorneycroftThe hon. Lady is quite right to draw attention to the importance of the subject. All I said was that I could not promise legislation this Session.
