§ 39. Mr. Rankinasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will give his reasons for increasing the number of members on the Board of British European Airways.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterTo strengthen the Board.
§ Mr. RankinCould the Minister say whether or not he had any representations from the Board that it was so overworked that it needed this extra strength; and if it needed it so badly, why did the right hon. Gentleman make a part-time appointment and not a full-time appointment? Can the right hon. Gentleman tell us what is the salary that attaches to this appointment?
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterThe reply to the first part of the supplementary question is that it is my responsibility to secure that the Board is properly manned, and even with the most recent appointments there are still vacancies within the total complement provided by the Act passed by right hon. Gentlemen opposite. The salary will duly appear in the White Paper on the nationalised boards which my right hon. Friend the Financial Secretary lays annually.
