HC Deb 28 February 1955 vol 537 c1703
34. Miss Bacon

asked the Minister of Health how many people have died during the last year as a result of accidental coal-gas poisoning; and how many such non-fatal accidents have been reported.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The provisional figure of deaths registered in the 12 months ended 30th September, 1954 is 669. The information asked for in the second part of the Question is not available.

Miss Bacon

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is considerable public anxiety at the increasing number of this type of accident? Has he any suggestions to make on the provision of adequate safeguards in respect of coal-gas?

Mr. Macleod

Any question that is directed to the cause of these unhappy accidents is one naturally for my right hon. Friend the Minister of Fuel and Power.
