§ 23. Mr. Warbeyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will initiate consultations on the situation in the Far East in accordance with the procedure laid down in Article 106 of the United Nations Charter.
§ Mr. TurtonNo, Sir.
§ Mr. WarbeyIs the Joint Undersecretary aware that this procedure would provide a form of conference which would be in accordance with the United Nations Charter and would, at the same time, give an opportunity to invite both the authorities which claim to be the Government of China? If the Government do not wish to adopt this procedure, what procedure do they intend to adopt to get a peaceful settlement of this problem, which is now getting very acute indeed?
§ Mr. TurtonIf the hon. Gentleman refers to Article 106 he will see that it provides for concerted action by permanent members of the Security Council in a situation which requires the use of armed force. Her Majesty's Government's object has been to stop the fighting not to extend it.
