§ 23. Mr. Hurdasked the Minister of Agriculture how the amount of lime applied to farm land during the past year compares with the use in previous years; and how far the results of soil tests made by the National Agricultural Advisory Service show that, generally, enough lime is being applied where it is needed on tillage ground and grassland.
Mr. AmoryLiming materials used on farmland in the United Kingdom averaged about 5½ million tons in the five years 1949–53. In 1953, nearly 6½ million tons were used, and in 1954 nearly 5 million tons. There is still a considerable lime deficiency taking the country as a whole, but progress is being made in reducing it.
