HC Deb 14 February 1955 vol 537 c8
5. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power to state the highest and lowest charge per unit of electricity in Great Britain; the regions in which these charges apply; and what progress has been made in the standardisation of charges for current and installation.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Comparable figures cannot be given because allowance must be made in each case for the relevant conditions attaching to the tariff. Most boards have now published a standard tariff for each class of consumer, and even where this has not been done considerable progress towards standardisation has been made.

Mr. Collins

Is the Minister aware of the wide disparity in charges in the same region between people on two-part tariffs and those buying electricity by slot meter, bearing in mind that slot meters generally apply to poorer people who are thus having to carry a disproportionate burden of the costs? Will he continually press the Authority to consider this matter and to make more equitable charges?

Mr. Lloyd

I would not like to deal with that particular question without notice.
