HC Deb 08 February 1955 vol 536 cc1712-3
9. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Minister of Works whether he is aware that there is only one children's playing enclosure with swings and similar equipment in Kensington Gardens, and that this is in the northwest corner; and whether he will establish a similar one in the southern section of Hyde Park.

Mr. Birch

I am not sure that Hyde Park is the best area to select for additional play enclosures, but, in any case, there is so much work waiting to be done in the Royal Parks that I cannot at present consider the hon. Member's suggestion.

Mr. Jeger

Will the Minister reconsider this matter, because a play enclosure of this kind would be a great boon to the children of Chelsea and South Kensington, who otherwise have to go a long way up to the north-west corner of the Gardens?

Mr. Birch

I think that the next play enclosure ought to be in Regent's Park.

Mr. Stokes

What possible objection could there be to having a children's playground installed somewhere near the bowling greens above Knightsbridge Barracks? That is the obvious place.

Mr. Birch

There is very heavy traffic in that area.

Mr. Stokes

Is there not heavy traffic all over London?
