HC Deb 08 February 1955 vol 536 c1714
13. Lieut.-Colonel Hyde

asked the Minister of Works whether, in the plans which Her Majesty's Government has for promoting further employment and reducing unemployment in Northern Ireland, he will give special consideration to the establishment of an atomic energy station in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Birch

Consideration will be given to Northern Ireland, along with other locations which may satisfy the technical requirements, if the Atomic Energy Authority should need to build a new establishment.

Lieut.-Colonel Hyde

While my right hon. Friend's reply, so far as it goes, will give satisfaction in Northern Ireland, may I ask him to bear in mind the particular importance of this Question, because Northern Ireland has no coal and at present has to import by sea all the coal it uses, both for domestic and industrial purposes?

Mr. Birch

I will certainly bear that fact in mind.
