HC Deb 08 February 1955 vol 536 cc1717-8
21. Mr. Dodds

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, to make a statement indicating the results so far obtained from the arrangements made by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in co-operation with local authorities, to-measure smoke and sulphur dioxide and so identify pollutants during periods of persistent smog.

Mr. Bevins

Measurements of air pollution are being made every day by local authorities and others in co-operation with the Fuel Research Station; the preliminary results are analysed in a monthly bulletin which is issued to Government Departments and local authorities. The help of Civil Defence volunteers is enlisted when the Meteorological Office predicts a severe fog to last more than 24 hours. This has happened only once this winter—on 16th November, 1954—and as the fog was dispersed by rain after a few hours, it was impossible to obtain the desired scientific information.

Mr. Dodds

Can the hon. Gentleman say how many have volunteered for this Civil Defence work?

Mr. Bevins

Not without notice.
