HC Deb 02 February 1955 vol 536 c1087
41. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what information he now has as to the results of the inquiry held into the loss of the s.s. "Faidherbe," which was lost with all hands in the Indian Ocean last October.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The formal investigation ordered by the South African Government began in Cape Town on 25th January, and I have asked to be sent a copy of the court's report. As soon as this is available, I will let the hon. and learned Member know.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister not in a position to say whether the question of compensation for dependants in this country is being considered?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I think that we had better await the Report.

Mr. J. MacLeod

As a son of a constituent of mine was lost in this tragedy, may I ask whether my right hon. Friend will see that all information from the inquiry is sent to the relatives at as early a date as possible?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I am making arrangements on receipt of the Report to see that all necessary information is made available to them.
