HC Deb 02 February 1955 vol 536 cc1091-2
44. Mr. Albu

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he has yet received a report from the British Transport Commission on the possibility of electrifying the Enfield line before the construction of the Route C tube.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

A proposal to electrify this line is included by the British Transport Commission in their plan for the modernisation and re-equipment of British Railways. The project is, I understand, not now considered to be dependent on the prior construction of Route C.

Mr. Albu

Do I understand from that reply that this proposal would, in fact, get considerable priority, and that as a result of the question which the Minister, I think, put to the British Transport Commission about this route, he has received this reply?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

My reply deals with the possible relationship between the order of this work and the Route C. As regards more general priority, it might be convenient to await subsequent debates on modernisation.
