HC Deb 12 December 1955 vol 547 c800
12. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware of the proposal to build a new office block at Roath abattoir, Cardiff; and if he will make a statement on the future of this abattoir.

Mr. Amory

Yes, Sir. In so far as the future of this slaughterhouse depends on long-term policy, I cannot make a statement yet.

Mr. Callaghan

Does the Minister think it reasonable to embark upon a new office block when the future of the abattoir itself is not settled?

Mr. Amory

The question of what action to take on that must be a matter within the responsibility of Cardiff City Council.

Mr. Callaghan

Whilst appreciating that, may I ask, in view of the desire of the Chancellor to curb capital expenditure, whether Cardiff City Council may not make a start in this direction because the proposal is so unwelcome to local residents?

Mr. Amory

I am afraid we must leave that to the discretion of the City Council.
