HC Deb 05 December 1955 vol 547 cc18-9
27. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much money has been spent by his Department on experiments to produce a concentrated beer.

Mr. Amory

Apart from a small amount of time spent by Government scientists in co-operation with the Brewing Industries' Research Foundation, direct Government expenditure on concentrated beer experiments, including hire of plant, purchase of materials and travelling expenses, has not exceeded £400.

Mr. Thomas

Is the Minister aware that that approaches being the most satisfactory answer given today, but is he further aware that it is difficult for people to understand why his Department should concern itself with what could clearly be left to private enterprise—the question of the concentration of beer?

Mr. Amory

I know, and I have great faith in private enterprise, but I have a particular interest in this for the very limited purpose I explained the last time this matter was before the House—for the purpose of supplying beer to our troops overseas. I should like to assure the hon. Gentleman that I do not really think that these experiments are likely to have the effect of promoting a widespread increase in the consumption of beer.

Dr. Summerskill

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what is a lethal dose of concentrated beer?

Mr. Amory

I do not know, but if the right hon. Lady would like, I will gladly try to secure her a sample.

Mr. Gibson

What are the reactions of the troops to the suggestion that their pint should come in little pills?

Mr. Amory

That is one of the things which, for security reasons, is being kept away from the troops at present.
