HC Deb 28 April 1955 vol 540 c1047
7. Lieut-Colonel Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will now announce the decisions he has taken on the Report of the Departmental Committee on the adoption of children.

Major Lloyd-George

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the answer I gave on 24th March last to the hon. Member for Tonbridge (Mr. G. Williams).

Lieut-Colonel Lipton

Is the Minister aware that quite a number of responsible people connected with adoption societies are very alarmed at the growing number of babies who are being smuggled out of this country by devious means to America? If the right hon. and gallant Gentleman is not doing anything about the Report of the Departmental Committee, will he at least urge the police to make the necessary investigation and to take the necessary action?

Major Lloyd-George

As the hon. and gallant Member knows, practically every one of the recommendations would involve legislation. I am not satisfied that the present system is working too badly. I do not share the hon. and gallant Member's view that there is a constant stream of babies going to the U.S.A. from this country. I have not come to that conclusion myself.
