§ 57. Mr. Ernest Daviesasked the Postmaster-General when work will begin on the Enfield automatic telephone exchange; and when completion is anticipated.
Dr. HillThe new building is expected to start at the end of 1956 and the automatic telephone exchange should be ready for service towards the end of 1960.
§ Mr. DaviesIs not it possible for work to start earlier than that, especially as about two years ago a promise was given by the Department that work would start earlier?
Dr. HillThe hon. Gentleman will realise that this year and in the next two years it is proposed to create new and extended exchanges to the number of about 370, in addition to the 60 large exchanges which are being converted to automatic use. This proposal needs to be fitted in with the general plan.
