HC Deb 21 April 1955 vol 540 cc341-2
19. Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Education whether he is aware that, although raw lead glazes have been forbidden in the manufacture of pottery made in factories and that specific restrictions apply to the use of low-solubility glazes, there is no such control when pottery is made in schools or in adult education classes; and whether, in view of the danger off lead poisoning to teachers and children, he will take steps to ensure that all glazes shall be of the leadless type.

Mr. Vosper

My right hon. Friend is looking into this question and will write to the hon. Member.

Dr. Stross

While thanking the Parliamentary Secretary for his reply, may I ask him if he is aware that after 100 years of constant effort in the pottery industry we have at last succeeded in getting rid of lead poisoning? It seems incredible that raw lead glazes and metallic poisons so dangerous to human beings should be creeping into schools and adult classes. Will his right hon. Friend not only write to me but consult the Minister of Labour, whose Department is so very well aware of the danger?

Mr. Vosper

My right hon. Friend is very grateful to the hon. Gentleman for bringing this question to his notice. He has already consulted the Minister of Labour but the matter requires further consideration.
