HC Deb 21 April 1955 vol 540 cc329-30
1. Mr. Albu

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will grant deferment from National Service to post-graduate students working part-time for the degree of doctor of science or doctor of philosophy.

The Minister of Labour and National Service (Sir Walter Monckton)

No, Sir. I regret that I am unable to make an exception to the general rule that student deferment is granted only to men whose studies or training are on a whole-time basis.

Mr. Albu

Will the Minister consult the Minister of Education, and if he finds—as I think possible—that the number of grants for post-graduate work. which is very important at present, are few, will he reconsider this matter?

Sir W. Monckton

I will certainly consult my right hon. Friend. I must not promise more than that.
