HC Deb 06 April 1955 vol 539 cc1179-80
71. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of Mau Mau adherents who have laid down their arms in Kenya under the surrender terms.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Between 18th January and 25th March, 230 Mau Mau adherents surrendered.

Mr. Brockway

In view of these rather disappointing figures, will the right hon. Gentleman consider the proposal, which has often been made, that conversations with Mau Mau leaders should be renewed by a European and an African who would be trusted by the African people?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I have always made it absolutely plain that if the way is shown for large-scale surrenders any who make the preliminary move will certainly not be repulsed.
