HC Deb 06 April 1955 vol 539 c1170
52. Mr. M. Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will appoint a committee to inquire into the conditions of coloured persons in Great Britain.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd)

I am as yet unable to add to the replies I gave to the hon. Member's Questions on the same subject on 3rd November and 8th December.

Mr. Stewart

Why does it take so long only to decide whether to set up a committee or not?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The setting up of the committee would raise a good deal of conjecture. Meanwhile, a large number of British subjects who are coming to this country are, on the whole, settling down pretty well.

Mr. Stewart

Is the right hon. Gentleman willing to consider the possibility of setting up a committee?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

It is certainly not ruled out.
