HC Deb 24 November 1954 vol 533 c1240
22. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what progress has been made in his discussions on the opening up of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to United Kingdom visitors who are independent of any sponsoring organisation.

Lord John Hope

My right hon. Friend would naturally welcome any development which made it less difficult for unescorted British subjects to visit Russia. The Soviet Government have not, however, yet shown themselves willing to welcome this form of tourism.

Mr. Jeger

Can the Joint Under-Secretary say whether discussions are still continuing towards that end?

Mr. K. Thompson

Where does the hon. Gentleman want to go—to Spain or Russia?

Lord John Hope

There are no discussions going on at the moment because there is nobody to discuss it with. We are ready, if other people are.
