HC Deb 24 November 1954 vol 533 cc1246-7
41. Mr. Renton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to reduce unemployment in Jamaica.

57. Mr. G. H. R. Rogers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the percentages of permanent and seasonal unemployment in Jamaica; and what steps are being taken to help the Jamaican Government with this problem.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I regret that figures for which the hon. Member for Kensington, North (Mr. G. H. R. Rogers) asks are not available. The Jamaica Government are continuing their efforts to expand production and employment, and the United Kingdom Government have given and are giving financial and technical assistance on a considerable scale.

Mr. J. Griffiths

Does the Secretary of State propose urgently to review the future plans of Jamaica? Will he take it from us that it would be the desire of the House, in view of the situation, that generous help should be given Jamaica to deal with this difficult problem?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I fully realise the magnitude of Jamaica's problems. As I think the right hon. Member knows, a new development programme for 1955 to 1960 has recently been drawn up.
