§ 33. Mr. Beswickasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has considered the resolution passed by the 1954 Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, of which he has a copy, calling for the constructive reform of the United Nations Charter; and what steps he is taking towards the implementation of this resolution.
§ Lord John HopeHer Majesty's Government are conducting a review of the United Nations Charter. In reaching conclusions they will take account of the views of all interested bodies, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union. It is too soon to make any statement concerning Her Majesty's Government's conclusions or intentions.
§ Mr. BeswickIs the Joint Under-Secretary aware that at the General Assembly next year this matter will have to come up for discussion? Ought not the country to be told what kind of reform the present Government have in mind? Ought not the House to have some indication of the reforms which it is proposed to put forward?
§ Lord John HopeAs I said, a review is now being undertaken by the Government.
§ Mr. A. HendersonDoes the Minister's answer mean that in due course the House will be given an opportunity to discuss the proposals?
§ Lord John HopeThat can certainly be considered.
