HC Deb 18 November 1954 vol 533 c540
6. Mr. Lee

asked the Minister of Labour to state the number of labour attaches at present operating in the Balkans and in the Middle East; and whether he will now strengthen the service in those areas.

Sir W. Monckton

There are labour attachés in Greece, Israel, Persia and Egypt. The last named, with an assistant, also covers a number of other Middle Eastern countries. The possibility of further appointments will be kept in mind for consideration when financial conditions permit.

Mr. Lee

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that the labour attaché service has done a most vital job under very difficult conditions in most parts of the world and that in the new conditions obtaining in the Balkans and the Middle East, and especially in the Persian area, it would be a very great step forward if he could strengthen the service now, irrespective of whether or not the Chancellor likes it?

Sir W. Monckton

I am well aware of, and share the view of the hon. Member about, the importance of labour attachés, and I shall not let the number diminish, if I can help it.
