HC Deb 17 November 1954 vol 533 c394
47. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Defence, in view of the fact that the hydrogen bomb has made it necessary to remove British Forces from the Suez Canal base, if he will state the Government's policy in regard to other bases within bombing range of Soviet territory.

Mr. H. Macmillan

Our agreement with the Egyptian Government is based upon many considerations which have been fully explained to the House. Her Majesty's Government will continue to maintain overseas bases suited to modern strategic requirements and will take full account of nuclear weapons in determining their size and location.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister aware that the hon. Member for Preston, North (Mr. J. Amery) said in the debate on Egypt that the bases in this country were equally vulnerable? Will not he pay as much attention to the fate of this country as he does to the base in the Suez Canal?

Mr. Macmillan

I am not responsible for what the hon. Member for Preston, North says.
